I've been absent for awhile, but for good reason! In the last few months, I have dealt with a leaking roof, a health scare, filled a 65 piece order, and been to both Detroit and Orlando and back...phew! I think I'll have to do a year end "wrap-up" post, as I did a couple years ago. I have one more show in November... Paul Gordon's "Friends in Christmas" open house. I will post more information on that, SOONER than later! For those interested in my work, but fast running out of surface space, I may soon be returning to painting/illustration work. It's been several years since I did any of that! Right now, I actually have some odds and ends up for sale on my website and blog. Even if you don't plan on purchasing, please have a look and enjoy!

Golden Glow Christmas Convention July 21-31

Come one, come all!!! The North Pole will be temporarily set-up for a short time in New York. Rye Brook is the location of this year's Golden Glow Christmas Convention from July 27 - 31. If you are unfamiliar with this organization, please refer to goldenglow.org and do what you can to attend one (or more) of their spectacular conventions. During these 5 day events, there are lectures, themed dinner and luncheon parties (complete with favors), a market of new Christmas creations, a sales room of antique Christmas items, and the true show piece of the event, the museum room. In the museum room, the finest in antique Christmas-related relics is displayed. Things that you could not even imagine...feather trees, Dresden tree ornaments, putz houses, Christmas dolls, antique toys, 19th century Santa costumes...WOW!

Once again, my creations will be at an event but I will be there only "in Christmas spirit." Collins Gifts will have a select assortment of my work, so stop by to see Wendy in the Christkindlmart, if you have the opportunity.

UFDC National Convention July 25-29

Well, well, can the year be better than half over? Time flies when you're having fun... AND when you're busy. I don't have much in the way of news for myself, but my little creations certainly are making up for that fact. A small assortment will be traveling cross-country in the company of Diane's Doll Shoppe for the UFDC Convention in Anaheim, CA. The convention takes place July 25th to 29th and if you are in Southern California (or can get there), you should stop in. You'll find everything in dolls...both new and antique. If you are an antique doll lover like me, you'll be in hog heaven! For more information on "public admittance," refer to ufdc.org.

UFDC is certainly the "word of the day," here in the studio. I am also working on a 65 piece order for the Lady Baltimore Doll Study group. They will be hosting a Halloween luncheon in October and my dolls will be a party favor for each guest. I can't say or show too much now, as I wouldn't want to ruin the surprise. I'll show you more after this sure to be fun-filled event...

Berniece the "Spot of Tea Bunny"

From the old hollow tree trunk, two bunnies carried a tiny table. You see, this was no ordinary tree trunk because nestled inside was a cozy well-kept home. The two bunnies, though not sisters, were as close as sisters and on that particular day they decided to have a tea party. Coquette, the taller of the two girls, brought along her favorite dolly to enjoy the affair. Berniece, the smaller of the two girls, followed along with her toy pot, cups, and saucers. As the table was set, a surprising sight appeared. It was Jimmy Rabbit riding upon a racer fashioned from an enormous orange carrot.

"Would you care to join our tea party, Jimmy Rabbit?" called Coquette as Berniece looked on in amazement.

"Aw, shucks no!" cried Jimmy. "Tea parties are for GIRLS! You should join me for I am off on a great adventure..."

Always at this time of year, the spotlight shines brightly on our little bunny friends. They are ever busy upholding their Easter-time traditions. By the score, bunnies all over the world are dying eggs, sewing toy self-replicas, and assembling fantastic presentation baskets. Schedules are set for the "big day" and this tiny legion works as efficiently as a favorite clockwork toy.

But, do you ever ponder the every day life of bunnies? Surely there is more to their lives than Easter preparations! If we could silently part the forest brances to reveal the proper clearing, what might we find? I imagine a miniature village... tiny houses formed from tree trunks, a town square, the post office, and a theatre. Every morning, Papa Bunnies set off to tend the fields of carrots and cabbage. Mama Bunnies shake out the rugs and keep their homes and the child-bunnies find no end to the pleasures of frolicking in the sunlight...

Little Ladies of the New Year

I'm a little late, but there is still one day left in January. So, I will say Happy New Year and wish everyone health and happiness in 2011. At any rate, it's never too late for well wishes!

I have nothing new to report from the realms of art doll creation. I can only say that I am working right along, getting things organized for the upcoming months. I'm setting up my show schedule, working on special orders and trying to accumulate stock. When I can spare a moment, I have been sorting through my collections and listing antique and vintage dolls, etc. on etsy and ebay.

While I am on the subject of antique dolls, I do have a little collecting experience to share. Presents are always fun, aren't they? Even presents that you purchase for yourself, right? Every year, within a couple months of Christmas (when I can afford it), I purchase a little something for myself. I don't mean to suggest that I don't receive lovely gifts from other people, but my "self-gifting" is a fun little tradition that I enjoy. I put my presents away and open them in private, usually after the new year. As I have a mind like a sieve, it's still a surprise... even though I purchased the items.

This year's "self gifts" are treasured finds. All were priced low, which is always appreciated. These dolls are not high-end by any stretch of the imagination, but each one is all-original and has simple, innocent charm.

I'm calling them the Little Ladies of the New Year. Please scroll down, see their photos, read the descriptions, and enjoy the artifacts of a long ago nursery....

Little Ladies of the New Year

9.5" tall... Bisque head marked "390 Made in Germany A9/0M" (Armand Marseille), open/close glass eyes, mohair wig. She has a composition body. She wears a pink silk dress and bonnet trimmed in lace (even some flowers on bonnet), buckram drawers and slip with lace, stockings, and one shoe. I imagine she lost the other shoe while making a hasty retreat from a kitten, sometime in the last century. circa 1900

7.5"... Bisque head marked "GK crossed bones symbol N Made in Germany 193 20/0 DEP" (Gebruder Knoch), fixed set eyes and blonde mohair wig. She also has a composition body. She wears her all original linen sailor dress and hat, trimmed in rickrack, buckram drawers, and has painted socks and shoes... the shoes are in a blue to match the dress! circa 1900

A dear little miniature doll, only 4.25" tall. Parian-type bisque shoulder plate head, bisque arms and legs. Her torso and upper arms and legs are cloth. Her outfit is all original and meant to depict some form of regional dress. The red skirt is fantastic, as is the fancy bodice! circa 1900

If you are curious about the painting in the background, it is an oil entitled "On the Lynn, North Devon, Eng."

It is dated July 23, 1886... folky-looking, in my opinion and just one of those odd little things I found at an estate sale.

You should see her songs and dances when she takes a turn in the glow of the footlights! No one does a better version of "Oh, By Jingo" or "Mistress Mumbo Jumbo." Of course, no STAR of the stage would be much of anything, without a spectacular costume. Katze is dressed in one of her favorites which includes a star headdress of glittering gold trimmed with a soft black fringe (her head fits right through it) and a frothy frock made entirely of antique Dennison crepe paper. For more playful fun and to create the illusion of a stage setting, Miss Katze arrives with tri-fold screen that includes "scrim" panels with applied gold stars and lots of frivolous gold braid trim. Thoughts on Crepe Paper

Wow, what an exciting title, huh?! Well, if that title caught your attention, we are kindred spirits! We must be either interested in the media of a gentler era or a little nuts! Either way, I'm glad you paused to have a look. Anyone who is into the doll making and/or decorative arts knows working with crepe paper is mostly a labor of love....

You may be asking yourself why I am currently preoccupied with crepe paper. I don't want to say too much at this point, but it will make complete sense upon the opening of the July 31rst EHAG Emporium. Aside from this, I do have to say that I adore the old fashioned charm of crepe paper. It was invented in the late nineteenth century and seems to have had a golden age in the years 1900 to 1930. During these years, it seems the Dennison company of Framingham, Massachusetts reigned supreme in the manufacture of crepe paper. Dennison published little booklets packed with wonderful illustrations and instructions for creating a wide variety of items with their product. Two of these little books, published in 1925, are pictured above. Costumes and flowers in crepe paper are quite reasonable. But can you imagine lampshades, bed spreads, or everday hats? I've actually seen these instructions in my studies. Dolls were also a natural conclusion when working in this medium. I am fortunate enough to have a set of old Dennison paper dolls with crepe paper costumes and a German bisque Christmas doll dressed in holly patterned crepe paper.

With regards to dolls, after seeing some of the old doll costuming and the Dennison costume books, I could not resist trying to make my own interpretations. I've done this for a few years, here and there, on my dolls. Modern crepe paper can be found by a few different makers. However, I must warn you that the quality is less than favorable. Modern crepe paper has no where near the strength of the old stuff. Expect to tear some part of the costume, just when you are thinking completion is almost at hand! When I have been able, I snatch-up vintage crepe paper. I've been lucky enough to find it on more than a few occasions. I recently used the orange (or amber, as it is labeled on the packaging) on a doll

(HINT-HINT). This vintage crepe paper is like a dream...heavenly....to work with. It has the

quality and strength of muslin and on this last project, not one piece of my pattern was torn.

I will end this post here. Again, I don't want to say too much and let the cat (HINT-HINT) out of the bag! "... Well! I've often seen a cat without a grin," thought Alice; "but a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life..."

Here is little Alice discovering the Cheshire Cat. Alice, the Cheshire Cat, and the base are all original sculpts in paperclay. Alice is dressed in delicate periwinkle China silk with silk ribbon accents and a pinafore of muslin trimmed with antique lace. The "cat's grin" floats above the stump in a trail of eerie ectoplasm. Please note the smiling black-eyed Susans. They are on their best behavior, as they hesitate at the idea of being plucked! Over-all size is 7.5" tall by 5.25" wide. Alice is completely removeable from the base, for ease of shipping and/or storage.

An Inspiration for Alice

On July 9th, the online organization Art Dolls Only is holding an exhibit with works inspired by Alice in Wonderland. I will be participating in this event and my "Alice creation" will be published on this blog Thursday, July 8th at 9:00 pm EST. In a dirty old garage, there once was a book...

A few years ago, I found myself helping my sister and brother-in-law clean out a dirty old garage. It was piled high with the debris of a recently deceased woman's life. How sad it seemed. There were boxes and boxes of what were probably this woman's cherished mementos. Unfortunately, no children or relatives were to be found to gather-up and care for these bits and pieces of the dead woman's life.

Of course, there was little time to dwell on the facts and sadness of the situation before us. There was a full garage, a dumpster, and time limitations. So, we got to work with the clearing. As we worked at the chore, lovely little bits of what was once a happy life kept coming to the surface. Before I knew it, I had a pile of odds and ends that simply could not be destined for the dump. My pile consisted mostly of old photographs and children's books... two things I cannot bare to see thrown away! I noticed an old copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in amongst the books. At the time, I supposed this was a typical early 20th century edition with some of the typical illustrations. In a few words, nothing special.

About a year later, I was researching in my collection of children's books when I again came across the old copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. My initial impression of this book was certainly a mistake. Upon further inspection, this is quite a magical little book. On the first page is written Charlotte Reardon, Xmas 1920. Charlotte was the mother of the woman whose personal effects were in the garage. Why Charlotte, as a grown woman, had a copy of this child's book is a mystery, but I guess it's not a situation that would be completely out of the question. The real excitement came at the title page of the book. Here, I found that this book was illustrated with "scenes from the photoplay produced and copyrighted by the Nonpareil Feature Film Corp." What a pleasant surprise! Not only is this book illustrated with photos of an old movie production, it is PROFUSELY illustrated! The photos show a production that was so witty, yet naive, that one can't help but to smile. When I say naive, I mean a lot of papier mache, painted wood and cardboard, and make-do costumes. There is definitely a "grade school pageant" quality, but it is utterly charming.

Item One "Cat Cry"

No amount of shaking that rattle seems to sooth this crying baby. So, what's a Mama Kitty to do? Ah well, might as well smile, smile, smile. Nothing seems to concern this Mama.

Dolls are in paper clay, dressed in calicoes and black ruffles, Mama features a sculpted poke bonnet, and they stand on a base created form a vintage "made in Japan" bellow toy.

Item Two "Saucy Sorceress"

With the wave of her wand, all things witchy and magical will materialize. One never can be to sure what the Saucy Sorceress will conjure up, but in this instance I see she has called up the tiny spirit of Hallowe'en joy!

Not quite your typical Hallowe'en hag, the Saucy Sorceress is in paperclay, dressed in calico and black ruffles. Her hair is in the style of an 1830's "milliner doll," complete with a slightly eerie skull hair ornament. A tiny half moon is painted on her handmade wand. The base is decorated with newspaper from a 1918 Pittsburgh publication, dresden sun, and gold rick rack.

Item Three "Mad Millinery"

Could it be so close to that most anticipated time of year?! It must be, as the Mad Milliner is in a frenzy of creativity, making all sorts of Hallowe'en hats! He has his milliner mannequin to display his most expensive Bal Masque top hat and a multitude of small party hats in progress are on the work table.

He is quite MAD, you know, so there is a twist to this piece... the milliner's head is interchangeable with the mannequin's head!

The doll in this piece is paperclay, dressed in felt and cotton. The two heads are interchangeable. Note the milliner's tiny jol pincushion. The milliner and table are both free standing, to allow versatility in display. The table is wooden and decorated with various fringes, newspaper from a 1918 Pittsburgh publication, features miniscule handmade paper and crepe paper party hats, and a milliner's bust mannequin.

In anticipation of the upcoming EHAG Emporium update on June 30th, here is a hint regarding my contributions. These are the dolls that inspired my forthcoming offerings...

One of the most appealing aspects of toys and dolls, both historically and in modern context, is the idea that they portray the ideal; the ideal conveyance, the ideal home, or the ideal fashion. In terms of fashion, our 19th century doll-making predecessors bequeathed a rich legacy of fanciful creations. These fancies are infinite, but in this installment I will focus on two categories, with three dolls as illustrations.

To begin with, there are two "bonnet head" dolls. Bonnet head is a general term used to describe a doll in any medium that features a molded hat or bonnet. The two pictured are from the latter part of the 19th century and were probably fairly inexpensive when new. The medium used in these examples is a course, untinted porcelain slip well suited for making modestly priced play-dolls. This type of porcelain is commonly referred to as "stone bisque." Though cheaply manufactured, these ladies have not skimped on their apparel. The larger doll has a magical butterfly bonnet perched atop her head. What could be more whimsical than donning a garden's most glamorous inhabitant? In the second photo, this little stone bisque doll is perhaps a bit more sensible, but no less attractive. She sports a very jaunty millinery creation featuring delightful ruffle and ribbon details.

The second style of doll I wish to focus on is the "milliner model." Of course, we identify millinery with hat-making, but millinery can also include all the trappings of fashion. In the broad context of millinery, you will find ribbons, laces, fabrics, feathers, and so forth. The milliner model doll was made in Germany with a papier mache shoulderplate head mounted on a rigid leather body. Carved wooden lower arms and legs complete this style of doll. Early doll collectors created a myth that these little beauties illustrated fashions of the 1820's-1860's. Modern research tells a different story. These little remnants of the past were merely play-dolls. The fact that they were playthings does not diminish their charms at all. My particular favorites date to the 1830's. Fashion records tell us that the 1830's were a time of ladies' hairstyles that were nearly as outrageous as those hairstyles of the 18th century royal french court. My pictured example has a quirky combination of curls covering her skull. Not only do curls cluster about her ears, they project from the top of her head in a feat that seems to defy gravity!

A Little Off- Season or A Little Off-in-the-Head,

You Be the Judge...

During these hot and humid early days of Summer, I could use just a hint of the cool crispness of Winter. Since I'm not some kind of "weather-wizard," I had to settle with working on this piece, entitled "Contemplating Christmas." This is a re-order, smaller version of a creation from April. As you can see, Santa is taking a little breather. He's hopped up on his vintage papier mache "boot-throne" and is contemplating plans for the upcoming Yuletide Season. He is dressed in an art-deco inspired fabric. Santa's boot is decorated with scans of my old Christmas postcards and tinsel trims. No matter the time of year, it's always a pleasure to revisit the Santas of years past and gain inspiration for a new artwork!

This is my first attempt at Hallowe'en ornaments. I've done many Christmas ornaments in this manner, so it was time for a new interpretation. These are bas-relief sculpted paperclay on a double layer of sturdy mat board. The backs are finshed as the fronts, in gold with polka dots and feature a tiny ribbon loop sealed with a dresden trim (slip an ornament hook right into the loop). The SET OF THREE includes Gentleman Jack, Clowning Cat, and Saucy Witch. They measure 3.5" tall. Spring Spree Update

After a bleak winter up and down the east coast and Midwest, a bright day of socializing and shopping was in order. April 17th turned out to just the day to fit the bill. Paul Gordon and a few of his artist friends hosted a day of fun, sales, and delicious refreshments. The weather even lent a gentle hand by holding back the winds and rain... for most of the day, at least!

If you haven't paid a visit to Mr. Gordon and his little wonderland of a shop, please put this trip on the top of your "to-do" list. Paul is a delightful host and words hardly describe the enchantment of his little (and quite large) creations. Martinsburg seems the perfect setting for an early 1900's movie and there are also some nice alternate shopping areas within 10 - 20 miles.

An invitation was extended for an "after-event" gathering at Paul Gordon's house. This was the highlight of the trip. Outside, the house is an impressive Second Empire-style in brick , with a mansard roof. Inside it's as if you step into the artist's mind. Curiosities and whimsies fill all nooks and crannies. Antique photos, paintings, posters, and tapestries hang from the walls. Dolls, mannequins, and decorative objects beckon for your attention from tabletops and shelves. What a joy it all is to be hold!

A "Famous" Gottschalk Dollhouse

Several years ago I attended a private doll sale, hosted by a dear doll-dealer friend of mine. The sale consisted of the collections of another friend, recently deceased. With so many wonderful things available at this sale, a humble little dollhouse sat forgotten on a table of odds and ends. Of course, I always take pity on humble little houses and recognized this particular dollhouse as a Gottschalk-in-the-rough. It was "priced to sell," so I purchased it, despite a few puzzled glances.

Upon doing some research, I was pleased to find that this (formerly) crumbling grand lady is "famous." This dollhouse appears, as purchased, on page 31 of Evelyn Ackerman's The Genius of Moritz Gottschalk. According to the text, the delightful balcony dome is a very rare Gottschalk architectural element.

Almost as long as I have owned this house, it has been packed away. Recently, I decided to unpack and re-examine this little gem. Though the former owner and Ackerman didn't seem to think restoration was neccessary, I couldn't help thinking this house "just seemed sad." With intentions of being as gentle as possible, I began some restoration work.

Because there is paper-loss above the "window-trio," I had few misgivings about altering this area. I recreated a triple keystone trim above the windows using layered cardboard (and a creative, patina'd paint job). There is some warpage in this area and the cardboard, while appearing to be wood, had just enough give to follow the bowing. I also used layered cardboard to create the two middle window divisions. These divisions are covered with a print-out of a scale photograph of the existing brick paper. Regarding the roof, only the front right section was missing blue paint. I decided to go ahead and paint it in a custom mixed, matching color. I roughed it up a little, so the finish would mimic the back roof panel. A little beeswax polish was applied to all painted areas. This wax gives the painted portions a slight lustre and lubricates the dry wood.

Lace curtains were the only alteration to the interior. Overall condition considered, the interior floor and wallpapers remain beautifully intact. Restored nearer it's former splendor, I doubt this "famous" dollhouse will be packed away anytime soon.

Highlights, End of 2009

Well, well, well, where to begin? With a blog update, seems to be the answer to that question! First of all, I'd like to wish you all health and happiness in 2010. This new century is just flying by, isn't it? With that said, I am going to break with my blog mission and briefly relate the events of 2009.

If I said the last half of 2009 was hectic, that would be an understatement! In August, I travelled to Sacramento, CA to participate in the Golden Glow Christmas Convention. What an experience....crazy Christmas collectors, as far as the eye could see and some of the most amazing new and old Christmas collections one could ever imagine. The members of this organization set-up a massive "museum hall" to showcase their collections. This was simply amazing! There were also themed dinners, lectures, an auction, and sales rooms. I sold my creations at the Christkindl Market and from my hotel room. I also caught-up with many of my old California friends.

Introduction of new Christmas tree ornaments

Upon returning home from Sacramento, there were six weeks to prepare for for Halloween and Vine in Petaluma, CA and Ghoultide Gathering in Northville, MI. Also around this time, I found out I was was accepted by the jury for a show called Christmas in the Woods, at Columbiana, OH. So, it was work and more work and a little more work, on top of that! I kept things in perspective and did my best to enjoy what I love doing. I had a ball creating this group of Halloween pieces. I incorporated several antique props in this group, including a 1920's Kewpie lamp, a 1920's platform horse, Edwardian shoes, and 1930's salt and pepper shakers. It sounds like quite an unlikely collection of items, but it all made sense in the end....cross my heart

After travelling cross country twice and setting up at three shows in seven weeks, my head cleared a little and it was time for Christmas in the Woods. Columbiana, OH is only about 20 minutes away and I was pleased to be a part of a local show. This show takes place literally "in the woods." It's really a charming venue in which every vendor has an interesting little "cabin" for merchandising and sales. This show takes place on the the second and third weekends of October. Approximately 30,000 people attend....charter busses arrive daily! I made many wonderful new acquaintances. Pittsburgh-area collectors seemed especially fond of my work.

So, by the end of October, you guess that my year was winding down? Oh, no....not just yet! I still had obligations to meet for the Toy Shoppe and Doll Masters Christmas catalogues. I also was fortunate enough to be invited to participate in the Mahoning Valley Historical Society's Christmas decoration of the Arms Family Museum home. The museum home is a wonderful circa 1900 arts and crafts style mansion which was named Greystone, by it's original owner, Olive Arms. Many local collectors loaned all kinds of wonderful things for the display. I even got caught up in the loaning, with antique dollhouses and dolls. What a treat...didn't even seem like work! Now, sometime in this time frame, I recieved an invitaion to sell at a holiday open house, hosted by Paul Gordon in Martinsburg, WV. I would not pass on an invitation from Paul, for anything! Paul is an amazing talent and one heck of a host! Visiting him is always such a pleasure, so accept his invitation if ever given the chance. His studio and his home are wonderlands....outward reflections of the workings of his imagination, I suspect.

Gottschalk, So Appealing

During the twenty years I have been collecting antique toys and dolls, I have come across many items that could set the heart racing. In the case of items from the Moritz Gottschalk firm, there is potential for coronary arrest! Well, perhaps this is a bit of exaggeration....or is it?!

Are you familiar with the the old German toys from the Moritz Gottschalk factories? The history of these particular toys begins in the year 1865. This was the year in which Ludwig Gottschalk began manufacturing cardboard and paper toys, as an extension of his bookbinding business. In 1866, he created a cottage industry of piece-workers and produced toy military helmets. By 1873, Ludwig owned a large factory in Marienburg, Germany. The factory complex housed, among other things, a lumber mill and lithography facility utilized in the production of tiny structures. The 1870's were the beginning of a golden age for miniature toys. With his fully equipped factory, Ludwig Gottschalk made some of the finest dollhouses, doll rooms, doll furniture, toy stables, and toy grocer shops ever available. The business grew and thrived throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ludwig died in 1905 and his son, Wilhelm Moritz, assumed company ownership. Though there was subsequent handing-down of the business, it retained the name Moritz Gottschalk until all production ceased in 1942.

What is it about Gottschalk's delightful little creations that is so appealing? American-made Bliss dollhouses possess similar construction methods and details in wood, cardboard, and lithographed paper. Overall, Bliss dollhouses are fanciful, if not overly sentimental, depictions of their full-sized counterparts. With Bliss toys, fairy-tales come to mind and I believe this impression leads to the roots of the Gottschalk appeal. The little Gottschalk houses seem more "real." While Bliss is a fashion plate, Gottschalk is every day attire. When ever I see a Gottschalk house, the experience is that of identity and coming home.

With such strong feelings about these toys, you may imagine that they often have influence in my creations. I am fortunate enough to own a few Gottschalk pieces- 3 dollhouses, 2 stables, 1 train station, 1 fortress, and the ultimate, 1 toy caravan. In the following two pictures, you may view my red- roofed stable and train station. Both date after 1915.

Last winter, while preparing for Paul Gordon's Friends in Christmas, I had an 8" Santa that needed some appropriate toys. What better playthings could Santa possess than a stable and platform horse? You may view the results in my blurry photo 3. Santa cradles a Gottschalk-influenced red roof stable which I created using painted illustration board. I enjoyed the construction of this piece, but it was soon time for this Santa to serve his purpose. He caught the eye of a collector and was whisked away to a new home where I hope he brings joy for many years to come.

From My Studio to You.....

Here on Hazelwood Avenue, we're waiting for Spring to show herself. Yesterday was partly sunny and 70 degrees. Today the rains came and it is forty nine degrees. Well, what better way to spend a rainy day than in creating a new blog?

In this post and future posts, I would like to share some of the things that inspire me. Often, the work that appears from my studio begins with an idea from that "muse" I call my collection.

As an example, I would like to share my antique fortune telling doll. This doll is a fascinating delight and a chronicle of a gentler time. She is categorized as German parian-type (Parian-type refers to white porcelain. In the 19th century, this unglazed white porcelain was produced in imitation of Greek marble). At some point circa. 1870, she was made up in a fanciful costume of velvet and glass beads. She also wears an underskirt of folded paper sheaves. These sheaves are the truly fascinating part of the presentation. Probably following a ladies' magazine instructions, each paper was cut and folded into a sort of petal shape. The lower end of each sheaf has a tab. When the tab is pulled and spread, a fortune is revealed. Clearly this little lady resided in France (or at least with French speakers), as each fortune is written in the "language of love."

I tried my hand at at recreating this type of doll with my Poupee Bien Informee (well informed doll). The fortune papers took some time to figure out, as did forming a secure and sturdy skirt-base. The actual doll more closely resembles some of the antique milliner-type dolls from my collection. My witch is dressed in vintage cottons and wears a laced girdle and a double neck bow (shades of recently viewing Marie Antoinette). As a finishing touch, I mounted my doll on a turned wood base for ease of handling and fortune viewing.
